A lot of us love fairy tales. One of the most famous, needless to say is Cinderella. Tragic family at the beginning, suffering from the mobbing by the step mother and sisters, missing opportunity to join the ball in the palace. A dramatical change with the help of fairy godmother, the dance with the prince, the missing glass slipper and a happy ending.

Some take-away from my side:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Project #vision plays an important role: If the fairy godmother did not paint a picture of the future to Cinderella, I would bet that she would not take the chance to join the ball.

๐Ÿช„ Similar to this, as a project manager it is not enough to keep the Quality, Time and Costs under control, but also a project vision and a big picture for your team. A clear and visual communication about the project goal helps to encourage and engage the team to unfold their potential during the whole process.

๐Ÿ‘‰ #resource management: the fairy godmother did not turn something out of nothing. She decided the apply whatever available, e.g. pumpkins to the golden carriage, mice to horses, rat to coachman, to make the most out of what is there already.

๐Ÿช„ As a project manager you have to have a good overview of the available resource, i.e. the available time, skills and competence, involvement of external partner for consultancy etc. Knowing how to make the most out of the available resources inside of the organisation and how to balance between the integration of external help, you are able to make of the most out of what is available.

๐Ÿ‘‰ #timeboxed is an important success factor in the story: Cinderella were only allowed to spend her time in the palace until 12 o’clock. Even though the time with the prince was limited in the first engage, with an imperfect experience, the prince and Cinderella both understand how to move forward. As the story follows, prince searched for his dream girl, Cinderella met her Mr. Right. And so on.

๐Ÿช„ We talk about #mvp (minimum viable product) often enough. Same here, make a clear and hard time-cut to finish a mvp, which might not be perfect enough but can trigger a further journey of improvement. Release the product early enough to gain customer feedback, with the cash income to continue with the development of the next better version.

What do you think? Compare to the above mentioned points, what else can you improve your role as a project manager? Feel free to share your thoughts.
